Readers Den - secret files & origins
Readers Den Comic Shop began as a used books stand at Green Point fleamarket in the early 1990s, mainly to generate some cash for school and varsity holidays ! We soon added back issue comics to our stock and found a small but enthusiastic market for comic books.
In July 1992 we took the big step of opening a small shop at the top of Long Street, and from the outset we were selling more comics than books ! After numerous requests, we began importing new comics from the USA. We quickly outgrew the tiny premises, and in early 1994 we moved to a bigger shop closer to the heart of Long Street. The mid 1990s was a period of growth, increasing our imported comics and buying and selling huge quantities of old comics. Comics were strictly graded according to condition and priced following the highly respected Overstreet Price Guide. We gained much experience at this stage and continued to expand our knowledge of this niche market. By the late 1990s our imports had grown, more fans were subscribing, and we noticed the expansion of graphic novels - a new format that was rapidly gaining steam. In 1999 we also built a rudimentary website to support the store, soon to be followed by an e-mail newsletter, alerting customers to the arrival of new shipments.
2002 turned out to be a banner year - we hosted the first annual festive event, Free Comic Book Day
, visited the biggest comics convention
held in the United States - San Diego Comic Con International
- and moved our shop to its current premises in Claremont
. During the next few years we expanded our business into new product lines : Japanese manga became a huge part of the market, action figures and statues developed into a niche of its own, and graphic novels boomed, becoming the most significant format for the comics medium. In 2006 we exhibited at the very first Cape Town Book Fair
, marketing graphic novels to a brand new audience - and we now exhibit at the Fair annually. To accommodate customers from all over South Africa - and the rest of the world - we converted our website into a fully functional e-commerce website in 2010.
2012 saw another expansion as we opened a second location in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town, in Tyger Valley Centre ! This outlet serves as a fully fledged branch as it is the same size and carries a similar amount of stock as the flagship store in Claremont.
