Free Comic Book Day
![]() FCBD is an annual festive event celebrated in comic book specialty shops on a worldwide scale. It began when comic shop retailer Joe Field suggested the concept to Diamond Comic Distributors in order to promote the comics medium as a form of art, literature, education and entertainment. The entire US comics industry - distributors, publishers and retailers - co-ordinated the event and in 2002 the very first FCBD was held, with some 2000 shops all over the world participating to give away more than 2 million comics to fans - absolutely free ! Since then FCBD has become an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May. For more information about this event on an international scale check the official FCBD website...
Readers Den Comic Shop participated in the very first FCBD in 2002 ( then at the Long Street location ), and for the first few years the store was the only shop in South Africa - indeed in the whole of Africa - to take part in the event. Since then we have hosted the event every year in our current Claremont location with great success. We have managed to turn the event into a huge festive day - hundreds of fans rock up every year to enjoy a fantastic day of free comics, sales and specials, discounts, competitions with loads of prizes, giveaways and costumed characters !
